If you’re wondering what a “not dog” is, it is a vegetarian hot dog. And the Bulldog Restaurant (btw – what’s up with the MySpace profile for bars?) in Minneapolis, MN has THE BEST not dog around. I am one for good hot dogs, but man, I would order that not dog over any hot dog any day.

Now that I’m no longer a vegetarian – even though when I was I was really bad at it – I still crave that not dog! Can it be like a drug? I know sushi is like drugs, but no-dogs? They typically suck.

The not dog on their menu comes with all the fixin’ options that their hot dogs do – any assortment of chicago style, beans & onions, jalapenos, etc. Pretty much anything you want on your dog you can get. It must be the texture – it’s very meatlike. I think it could fool any meat-eater.

Not to mention, the Bulldog does have an excellent assortment of beers on tap – Bell’s 2 Hearted (my alltime fave), Rush River Beers (a local Wisconsin brewery w/a good red), Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Hoegaarden, etc.

Do yourself a favor and check it out. You will be mighty satisfied with your choice of not dog.

Man, I don’t particularly like hot dogs (usually too salty), but you got my mouth watering! Not a vegetarian either (I tried, but I lost too much weight, so I went back to eating meat). Next time I’m in Minneapolis, I’ll definitely check this place out.

Wow – did I see you last night? We had a strangely similar experience and blogged about it on the same day. http://www.twincitieseats.blogspot.com

Seriously! This no-dog is unbelievable. You know how when a brat is cooked perfectly and the casing is tight and crunchy to hold in all the juices? That is how the no-dog at Bulldogs tastes to me.

I’ve always wondered about the concept of vegie food tasting and texturing like meat. Creeps me out a bit to think that a dedicated veger would even want those flavors and textures.

Wouldn’t the vegie analog of the hotdog be a notdog?

You’re totally right – it should be notdog. In fact it might be called that on their menu – I don’t remember.

As for the veggie food tasting like meat…some people I know choose veggie over the real thing because of health reasons. So they’re looking for a substitute that could be healthier than the real version. In that case, the texture and taste is important.

    Can’t argue with that.

Meant to say earlier that I enjoy your blog.

The mussel/fries/gyros business is right up my alley. I’ve been a devotee of those and other yummy things for longer then i care to say.
